Pfefferkuchen – Plätzchen
Imagine the joy of pulling a tray of freshly baked cookies out of the oven, their golden brown edges beckoning for a taste. Let’s get started with our Pfefferkuchen!
Ingredients
- 250g all-purpose flour
- 100g brown sugar
- 100g honey
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
- Optional: Icing sugar for decoration
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and all the spices. Mix well until everything is thoroughly combined.
- In another pot, gently warm the honey until it becomes liquid. Once warm, allow it to cool slightly, then add the egg. Whisk until combined.
- Gradually add the honey mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth dough forms. If the dough feels sticky, you can add a little more flour as needed.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for at least an hour (this helps the flavors to meld together).
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Once the dough has rested, roll it out on a floured surface to about 5mm thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
- Place the cut-out cookies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until they are slightly firm to the touch and have a nice golden color.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. If desired, once cooled, you can decorate them with icing sugar.
Enjoy your freshly baked Pfefferkuchen with a cup of hot cocoa or tea! These cookies not only boast a rich flavor profile but also make for wonderful gifts during the holiday season. Happy baking!
