Nilgiris Black Channa

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Nilgiris Black Channa (soaked overnight)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Begin by rinsing the soaked black channa thoroughly. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a pressure cooker or pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cooking until the raw smell dissipates.
  5. Add the pureed tomatoes and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
  6. Now, add the soaked black channa along with turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add enough water to cover the channa, then cover the pot and cook under pressure for about 15-20 minutes. If using a regular pot, you may need to cook longer, until the channa is tender.
  8. Once cooked, release the pressure and check the consistency. If it’s too thick, add a little water. Stir in the garam masala.
  9. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving.

This Black Channa Curry is hearty and packed with flavor, making it a family favorite. Serve it hot with steamed rice or warm naan, and enjoy a nourishing meal that’s both satisfying and delicious.
