Asian Water Roux White Bread
This bread is not only delicious but also incredibly versatile. Whether you want to use it for sandwiches, toast, or just enjoy it on its own, this recipe won’t disappoint. Let’s get started!

Ingredients
- For the Water Roux (Tangzhong):
- 1/4 cup bread flour
- 1 cup water
- For the Dough:
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 1/4 cup milk (warm)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- Start by making the water roux. In a saucepan, whisk together 1/4 cup of bread flour and 1 cup of water over medium heat. Stir continuously until it thickens to a pudding-like consistency. Remove from heat and let cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 1/2 cups of bread flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- Add in the cooled water roux, warm milk, softened butter, egg, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover the loaf again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes until it has risen above the edge of the pan.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for about 30-35 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bread to cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Enjoy this soft and fluffy Asian Water Roux White Bread as part of your meals or as a delicious snack. It’s perfect for sharing with family and friends!
