Black and White Cookies
These cookies have a rich history and a special place in many hearts, especially in New York. They are a perfect combination of textures and flavors, with a cake-like base and sweet icings that melt in your mouth.
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for chocolate icing)
- 1 tablespoon light corn syrup (for icing)
- 1 tablespoon hot water (for icing)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
- Using a tablespoon or cookie scoop, drop dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- For the icing, combine the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, corn syrup, and hot water in two separate bowls. Mix until smooth, ensuring your chocolate icing is a little thicker than the vanilla.
- Once the cookies are cooled, spread one half with the vanilla icing and the other half with chocolate icing. Allow the icing to set for a bit before serving.
Enjoy these delightful cookies with a cup of your favorite tea or coffee, and share them with friends and family for an extra special treat!
