There’s something magical about the aroma of freshly baked croissants wafting through the kitchen. Whether you enjoy them plain, filled with chocolate, or accompanied by jam, homemade croissants are a luxurious start to any day. Below, you’ll find the simple yet rewarding recipe that will have you channeling your inner pastry chef.

Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Additional flour for dusting
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- Add the whole milk to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes in a covered bowl.
- While the dough rests, prepare the butter. Place the cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper and pound it into a flat rectangle using a rolling pin. Refrigerate until firm.
- Roll out the rested dough into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Place the chilled butter in the center, folding the dough over to encase the butter. Pinch the seams to seal.
- Roll the dough out into a long rectangle. Fold it into thirds like a business letter. This is your first turn. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times, chilling for 30 minutes between turns.
- After the final turn, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thick and cut into triangles (about 5 inches in height).
- Starting from the base, roll each triangle tightly towards the tip and place them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
- Let the croissants rise in a warm spot for about 2 hours, until they have doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Brush the croissants with the beaten egg to create a beautiful golden crust.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.
Enjoy these delicious croissants fresh out of the oven with your favorite filling or simply as they are. Happy baking!
