Ingredients:
- 1 package (16 oz) of phyllo pastry
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups chopped nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Start by preparing the nut filling. In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
- Unroll the phyllo pastry and cover it with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out. Take one sheet of pastry and brush it lightly with melted butter. Place it in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Repeat this process with about 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter before adding the next.
- Once you have a nice base, spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Add another 2 sheets of buttered phyllo on top, then continue layering with the nuts and phyllo until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo pastry (about 8 sheets). Brush the top with melted butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut diamond or square shapes into the top layers of the Baklava. This will make it easier to serve.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
- While the Baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Remove Baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Allow it to soak for at least 4 hours before serving.
Now, sit back and enjoy your homemade Baklava! Each bite will have you dreaming of the sweet and flaky layers combined with that heavenly syrup. It’s truly a labor of love that’s well worth the effort!
