Ingredients
- 1 cup green moong dal (split green gram)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Start by rinsing the green moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and ensures a better texture.
- Set your Instant Pot® to the sauté mode. Add oil or ghee and let it heat up.
- Once hot, add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then, add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, and chopped tomatoes. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes soften.
- Now, add the rinsed dal, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Pour in 4 cups of water and mix everything together.
- Close the lid of the Instant Pot and set the valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure for about 15 minutes.
- Once the cooking time is complete, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then do a quick release for any remaining pressure.
- Open the lid and give the dal a good stir. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can add a little more water.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
