Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in the cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  4. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and blanch the chopped cabbage for about 2-3 minutes until it softens. Drain and set aside.
  5. In a large baking dish, spread a layer of the meat and rice mixture on the bottom. Top it with half of the blanched cabbage, then another layer of the meat mixture, followed by the remaining cabbage, and finish with the last bit of meat mixture on top.
  6. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30-35 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes to allow the top to become slightly crispy.
  7. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

This dish will warm you from the inside out! It’s hearty, filling, and packed with flavor. Serve it alongside a fresh salad or some crusty bread for a complete meal. Enjoy your cooking adventure!
