Grandma's Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage, Slow Cooker Variation

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Start by carefully removing the core from the cabbage head. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch the cabbage for about 5 minutes until the leaves are tender. Carefully remove the leaves, allowing them to cool.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, diced tomatoes (with juice), tomato paste, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme, and dill. Mix until well-blended.
  3. Take a cabbage leaf and place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture at the base of the leaf. Roll it up tightly, tucking in the sides to seal the filling. Repeat this process with the remaining leaves and filling.
  4. Pour a bit of beef broth into the bottom of the slow cooker. Layer the cabbage rolls in the cooker, packing them in tightly.
  5. Once all the cabbage rolls are in the slow cooker, pour the remaining beef broth over them. You can also add any leftover meat mixture on top for added flavor.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is thoroughly cooked.

Serve these delectable stuffed cabbage rolls with a dollop of sour cream on top for an extra creamy touch. Enjoy this cherished recipe, a perfect blend of tradition and comfort, with your loved ones!
