This versatile bread can be served alongside various dishes or used to make sandwiches. Its slightly chewy texture and warm flavor make it a favorite at the dinner table. Let’s dive into the recipe!
Lepinja (Balkan Flatbread)
Lepinja is a traditional Balkan flatbread that pairs beautifully with grilled meats and a variety of spreads. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create this wonderful bread right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with the olive oil.
- Gradually mix the flour into the liquid until a dough starts to form. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6-8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and then flatten it into a disk about ½ inch thick.
- Arrange the disks on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Cover them with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake the flatbreads in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown.
- Remove the lepinja from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Enjoy your freshly baked lepinja warm, either on its own or with your favorite dips. They are perfect for soaking up flavorful sauces or as a side to your favorite meal. Give this recipe a try, and bring a little taste of the Balkans to your kitchen!
